That Thanksgiving Dad received the L.L. Bean catalog in the mail. He promptly fell in love. It wasn't just ANY coat. It was special. "Look, Janey, it's reversible." "Look, Janey, it's DOWN.", "Look Janey, it's camouflage!" It was the ONLY thing he wanted under the tree. This mantra went on for the weeks leading up to Christmas, with vigorous appeal. Christmas day, Dad strutted out the door headed to Clate's store in the village. As he crossed the bridge he noted in his rear view, one of the residents of the half way house. Head bent and shoulders hunched into the blustery winter wind, making his cold way slowly towards the bridge. Upon Dad's return from the store, Mom looked up at Dad as he walked through the door in his new Christmas sweater. Sans coat. Dad spoke one sentence, "He needed it more than I did, Janey."
