The musician who came to dinner

Chuck and I feel fortunate to have been among John's new friends. We met him in December 2001 at a holiday gathering of sacred-harp singers and formed an immediate bond because John had known my mother, who'd died in 1998. In the years that followed the three of us traveled to singings, enjoyed meals and picnics, walked the Rockland Breakwater, toured John's daylily beds and shoreline, performed a mummer's play, sang O'Carolan tunes, attended a recital on a restored organ in Damariscotta and an annual service at the Old German Church in Waldoboro, watched the Boat-Yard Dog Trials, discussed problems and their possible solutions, and shared stories and laughter. Sometimes we planned our get-togethers. Sometimes John just dropped by. Once, he phoned to ask, "Would you like a musician to dinner?" We said yes and John arrived with an accordion and a sheaf of words. While I cooked, John made music. After we ate, he gave us more music. Like so many times with John, this evening was very special. We will miss him.
