Obituary for Percy L. Young

Percy L. Young
SPRUCE HEAD - Percy L. Young, 96, died peacefully Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at Tall Pines Rehabilitation Center in Belfast, after a long period of declining health.
Born in Rockland, June 22, 1914, he was the son of Hattie E. Brown Young. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Rockland High School.
In earlier years he worked at F.W. Woolworth and later for several years at Crie's Hardware, both in Rockland.
After marrying Lillie York, he made his home in the mid-cast area, where the couple raised their family. Mrs. Young died January 10, 1982.
During World War II, he was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and assisted in coastal patrols.
A social individual, Percy enjoyed involvement in many community events and for more than 25 years was an active member of South Thomaston Lion's Club and as a 32nd degree Mason was a member of the Knox Lodge of Masons in South Thomaston. During the 1950s he served as Director of Knox County Civil Defense.
During his younger years he enjoyed hunting; but later in life, as an accomplished photographer preferred shooting things with his camera rather than a gun.
Another one of his passions was his family band, "Percy Young and the Stompers Kitchen Band", which included his wife Lillie, son Dennis and other close friends. They often played at area nursing homes and at the Lobster Festival.
Percy's family said that there was nothing he couldn't do.
A few of his interests included woodworking, making beautiful furniture, hunting and fishing. At the age of 80, he established Young's Woodworking. He made various types of furniture and novelties which he sold or donated to charitable organizations. Percy was proud to not only be the craftsman of his business, but also to be the business manager, keeping the books and filing the taxes.
For several years he provided a home and served as a caregiver for several friends and family members.
He is survived by three sons, Dennis L. Young of Thomaston, Clinton L. Young and his wife Laurie of Belfast, Richard L. Young and his wife Patricia of Lincoln, NB; five grandchildren, Jennifer Fitzgerald, Richard Young, Kipa Davis, Lucas Young, Greg Young; eleven great-grandchildren; and one niece, Judy Sinclair.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 18, 2010, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday. The Reverend John Ineson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Village Cemetery, South Thomaston.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the South Thomaston Lions Club, or Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, Donation Department, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
