A Fond Farewell from the Four D’s

Dad…..It’s hard to believe you have passed and gone on to be with our heavenly father. It seems just like yesterday we were kids helping you build the Irene Alton in our back yard. All four of us helped you in our own way, knowing that you were providing for your family. The 57’ keel, which laid in our back yard for years, served as a great s...tand for target practice as we tried to knock off cans with our BB gun. Who knew Mom was such a sharp shooter. As we grew up, you showed us your love of the sea by sailing in Owls Head harbor on our little sailboat named the “4 D’s. You loved to hear us all scream (not in joy) and Mom would say calmly and quietly “Bernard” as you let the wind fill her sails and tilt us to one side until we were inches from the sea. You taught us how to drive before we were legally allowed, (and it had to be a standard shift). Little did we know that the real reason for teaching us to drive so early was so that we could deliver lobster traps down to the shore for our grandfather….Grampy Raynes…which entailed us backing up onto Pete Reed’s Wharf to deliver our load. We’ll never forget how we were often awakened by a whistled tune up the stairs and we knew there was oatmeal that would “stick to our ribs” waiting for us, how we all had to be quiet at 6:20 at night so you could hear the weather report(on channel 6), how you climbed up on the roof for us to turn the antenna to make the TV come in better, and who can forget all the fun we had on those summer boat trips, with 40 or so family and friends on the “freshly” painted Irene Alton. We tested your patience in our younger years, and probably even more as we got older, but through it all you supported us with your love, generosity, kindness, understanding, and of course your sense of humor. You risked your life for us on the open ocean, and we can’t tell you how very much we missed you while you were gone, and how much we enjoyed your company while you were home. Although you are no longer with us in body, your spirit lives strong in each one of us. You and Mom’s legacy will continue on with our children and their children. Thank you Dad for making us laugh. Thank you Dad for loving us so much. Thank you Dad for all the good times we have had together…..we will miss you. Love always and forever….Your Four D’s…..
