Obituary for Sidney M. Orne

Sidney M. Orne
ROCKLAND—Sidney M. Orne, 82, of Cushing died October 16, 2010, surrounded by his loving family at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, following a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Born July 20, 1928, he was a son of Alfred H. and Bertha Carter Orne of Cushing. After graduating from Thomaston High School in 1947, he joined the Army, serving as a teletypist and a cook at Forts Monmouth and Meade. He reenlisted in the Army Reserve, and in November 1950 was called up to serve in Japan during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion Post No. One, both in Rockland and was a Mason.
He married Mary Ilvonen in 1951 and settled in Owls Head. Under the G.I. Bill of Rights, he trained as a linotype operator at the Courier-Gazette, and in 1955 he went into the trucking business with his brother-in-law, Richard Ilvonen. The partners bought a 10-wheeler and traveled New England building highways. They also hauled wood for Great Northern Paper Company.
In 1956, the Camden Herald hired Sid as a linotypist, and in 1964 the Courier rehired him to run its linotype operations. He worked in stripping and in the pressroom, and in 1968 he was promoted to production manager and served in that role until retiring in May 1992. He was a member of the board of directors of the Maine Graphic Arts Association.
In the early 1970s, he and his wife co-owned Mic Mac Cove Campground with their friends, the Lohneses. From 1977 to 2009, he loved hauling lobster traps on the Meduncook River, often bringing along family and friends. His buoy colors were fluorescent yellow and orange stripes, and he used a gill net to get his own bait. He was an active outdoorsman, hunting deer and duck and fishing for salmon in Maine lakes.
He was proud of the many pieces of furniture he made for family, friends and church, and was an avid card and cribbage player. He loved those Red Sox, almost as much as he hated the Yankees, spending hours rehashing games and cursing management. He caught a baseball at Yaz's last game.
He was a loving father and a friend to many. In June, he was recognized for 70 years of membership at Broad Cove Church in Cushing, where he served on the board of trustees and enjoyed cooking for the public breakfasts on Saturday morning.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, his daughters Deborah Kalloch and her husband David of Rockland; Katherine York and her husband Jim of Owls Head; his son William Orne of Washington and companion Barbie Murray; his grandchildren Peter Orne of Belmont, Mass.; Kristen York Freeman of Owls Head; James York of Bristol, R.I.; Ansel Orne and Alexandra Orne of Washington, Me.; his great-grandchildren Jack and Katherine Freeman of Owls Head; his siblings Howard Orne of St. Louis, Mo., Bernice Bennett of Thomaston; Eleanor Rose of Thomaston; Kenneth Orne and his wife Millie of Union; Gloria Dearborn of Union; Joan Butler and her husband Wayne of Union; and Leona Mixon of Georgia. He is predeceased by his siblings Edith, Mary and Ralph.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 6:00 to 8:00, Friday, October 22, 2010 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. The funeral service will be held at 11:00, Saturday, October 23, at Broad Cove Church, 87 Pleasant Point Road, Cushing. The Reverend Elizabeth Bilodeau will officiate.
