Obituary for Laurel M. Moulton (Smallwood)

Laurel M. Moulton (Smallwood)
THOMASTON - Laurel M. Smallwood Moulton, 72, died surrounded by her daughters, November 5, 2016 at the Sussman House in Rockport following a heroic, decade long battle with Breast Cancer.

Born in Rockland, December 21, 1943, she was the daughter of Raymond and Genevieve Lindsey Smallwood and step-daughter of Wesley L. McGibney. Graduating from Rockland schools she married Dennis Wayne Ames on June 9, 1962. Together they had three daughters, Denise, Stephanie and Genevieve.

She was a true Jill of all trades; she worked in many varying industries, her favorite being the Gasparilla Inn, in Boca Grande, Florida. She traveled there for many winters and met many people that she thoroughly enjoyed.

She was avid crafter, seamstress and talented baker; creating beautiful wheat weavings that she gifted to her family and sold to the public. She loved ceramics and took special joy in creating clothes for her daughters as well as their Barbie dolls. Her family-famous Whoopie Pies were a big hit not only with her family but also the entire neighborhood. She found it highly amusing that her three daughters have yet to make them right.

Her true love was books. A voracious reader she could always be found reading. In later years she went nowhere without her Kindle, which became her prized possession, containing thousands of her favorite books. She passed her intense love of reading on to her three daughters, enabling them to explore the world from home.

Special joy was spending time with her six grandchildren and in her later years, ten great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all.

Other than her parents, Laurel was pre-deceased by her brother C. Bryce Smallwood and his wife Carolyn and Son-in-Law Timothy O. Clark. She is survived by three daughters; Denise Clark of Cedartown, GA, Stephanie Ames of Ashville, NC, Genevieve Richardson and husband Darrin of Waldoboro, ME. Three brothers; Leslie Smallwood of Casselberry, FL, Brian Smallwood and wife Cherry of Charlotte, NC, Raymond Smallwood of Killeen, TX. Sister; Donna Acorn and husband Ronald of Washington, ME and FL. grandchildren; Nida Kunesh and husband Scott of Liberty, ME, Joshua Simmons of Waldoboro, ME, Megan Clark of Camden, ME, Derek Gregory of Bath, ME, Deserea Lawson of Waldoboro, ME, Danielle Lawson of Waldoboro, ME. great-grandchildren; Mckenzie, Nathaniel, Ethan, Jackson, Rowan, Ayden, Kaylee, Chloe, Adayla and Aramae; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A special heartfelt thank you from the family to all of the Doctors, Nurses and CNAs of the Sussman House who took such wonderful care of Laurel and her family during their stay.

A private service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Sussman House, C/O Pen Bay Healthcare, 20 White Street, Rockland, ME 04841.
