Obituary for Robert Edson Worthing

Robert Edson Worthing
DAMARISCOTTA – Robert E. Worthing, 85, formerly of Cushing, died peacefully, Friday, September 2, 2016, surrounded by his loving daughters.

Born in Augusta, April 14, 1932, he was the son of Jasper and Marion Parker Worthing. Educated in Augusta, Bob was a graduate of Cony High School. Following graduation Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Europe during the Korean Conflict.

After he was honorably discharged, Bob returned to the States where he enrolled in the University of Maine at Orono. While there Bob was active on campus, serving as President of Student Senate, and was a member and President of his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi. During his time at college, Bob started dating his sweetheart and love of his life, Nancy Cross, with whom he had attended high school. After Bob graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Education, he and Nancy were married in Augusta on June 8, 1957. Together they made their home in Gilford, where Bob taught High School History for five years.

Continuing to grow their family, Bob switched careers, starting in banking just before the birth of their third daughter. At this time the family moved to Cumberland where Bob began working with Canal Bank. After nearly 10 years with that company, the family settled in Thomaston and Bob began employment with Camden National Bank. Bob retired as a Vice President of that bank, and later continued as a consultant.

In 1999 Bob and Nancy started construction of their retirement home in Cushing. They loved the community of Cushing and enjoyed being out and about. Together they were active members of the Broad Cove Church and Bob served as a town selectman for several years. He loved working around his home, tending his beautiful gardens. Bob was a skilled woodworker, enjoying and excelling especially in fine woodworking.

In recent years, Bob has enjoyed residency and the friendships he made at Chase Point Assisted Living in Damariscotta. His easy-going personality and charm made him a favorite of many of the residents and staff members alike.

Bobs number one priority in life was his family. He loved nothing more than spending time with his daughters and their families. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Nancy in 2009, Bob is survived by his daughters, Cindy Bickford and her husband Brian of Cumberland, Cheryl Anne Worthing and her partner Kim Colson and family of Hope, Sue Ellen Worthing of Portland; his brother, Parker Worthing and his wife Marcia of Ormond Beach, FL; his grandchildren, Meghan and Kyle Bickford of Cumberland; and a niece and nephew Jane and Peter Worthing.

A Celebration of Bob’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 9, 2016 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Andrew Stinson will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Miles and St. Andrews Home Health and Hospice, LH Development Office, 35 Miles Street, Damariscotta, Maine 04543.
