THOMASTON - Gwendolyn R. ‘Cubby’ Korhonen, 90, died peacefully, with her loving family at her side, Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Born in Rockland, September 23, 1925, she was the daughter of Harold A. and Vesta Simpson Dean. Educated locally, she was a 1943 graduate of Rockland High School.

During her high school years, Gwen worked summers and busy holiday seasons at Van Baalens. In her free time she enjoyed roller-skating, going as often as possible. She enjoyed this hobby even when she was well into her 60’s. She was also an avid reader her entire life.

In 1945 Gwen married the love of her life, Paul J. Korhonen. Throughout their marriage she spent her days as a homemaker, tending to the needs of her family. She remained steadfast in her devotion to him even after his untimely death in 1986.

Gwen was a charter member of the Nativity Lutheran Church and she was active there helping with church gatherings and dinners.

Mrs. Korhonen was predeceased by her husband in 1986; as well as three sisters, twins, Kathleen Fullerton and Katheryn St. Clair, Norma Munro; a brother Arthur Dean; and a great-granddaughter Aubrey Malburg. She is survived by her son Ron Korhonen of Cushing; her daughter Lauren Barnes and her husband Perry of Thomaston; her grandchildren, Jerrold Johnson and his wife Tricia of Thomaston, Michael Ladd of Old Town; and two sisters-in-law, Sonja Surek and her husband Peter, Mary Lear and her husband Dana all of Thomaston; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Nativity Lutheran Church, 179 Old County Road, Rockport. Interment will be held at Village Cemetery, Thomaston.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nativity Lutheran Church, 179 Old County Road, Rockport, 04856.
