Obituary for Sidney Milton Johnson

Sidney Milton Johnson
ROCKLAND - Sidney M. Johnson, 90, died peacefully with his family at his side, Thursday, December 3, 2015 at Sussman House in Rockport.

Born in Brookline, Massachusetts, March 20, 1925, he was the son of Sidney Milton Warshauer and Edna Lord Warshauer. Educated in Massachusetts, he was a 1943 graduate of Brookline High School.

Following graduation, Sidney enlisted in the Unites States Marine Corps in July of 1943 and was honorably discharged in June 1946. While enlisted he attended Aviation Machinist Mate and Magneto School. During the war he worked as a first mechanic in a B-25 squadron and later as an automotive mechanic while serving overseas. Three months prior to his discharge, Sidney was promoted to Assistant Shop Foreman. At that time he purchased a brand new 1946 Plymouth, which was his pride and joy.

After being honorably discharged Sidney attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1951. At this time, Sid also married Beverly Mae Orcutt of Holbrook, Mass on August 25, 1951. Together they raised three boys on the Garland Road in Winslow. Over the years, Sid was active with the Boy Scouts as well as a member of the Waterville Lodge of Masons #33, serving as Master in 1978. He was also a member of the Kora Shrine Temple and the Mid-Coast Shrine Club.

On June 11, 1951, he joined the Hollingsworth and Whitney (Scott) Paper Company in Winslow. Sid’s attention to detail and incredible work ethic allowed him to advance from the Junior Engineer position he was hired for, through several positions with increasing responsibility, to Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent. After more than 32 years of combined service, he retired from Scott Paper in September, 1983.

Predeceased by his wife Beverly in 2006; Mr. Johnson is survived by his sons, Stephen Johnson of Rockland, Neil Johnson and his wife Mary of Mansfield, MA, Paul Johnson and his wife Julie of Eliot, ME; his grandchildren, Susan E. Kelly and her husband Shawn of Foxborough, MA, Scott Johnson of Tyson Corner, VA, Jill Johnson of Mansfield, MA; as well as two great-grandchildren, Colin and Jake Kelly.

A celebration of Mr. Johnson’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Seth D. Jones will officiate.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
