a flutter of red 
danced through the air.
a brilliant red,
more brilliant than a paint brush
could ever dream of.

it stopped in the grass to rest.
it was a cardinal.
he danced on the ground 
with a gentle grace.
on this warm and peaceful evening
he imitated my mood.
I thought it was beautiful.
my grandmother always liked cardinals.
now I know why.
