WEST ROCKPORT - Lois M. Bragg, 81, went home to be with her Lord, early Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at her home after an extended illness.
Born in Rockland, November 8, 1933, she was the daughter of Eckart G. and Grace E. Carroll Colburn. Her early years were spent in Warren. From 1940 to 1943, she lived in Deer Isle where she completed the 4th, 5th and 6th grades. She returned to Warren where she completed her education.
On August 12, 1950, she married William ‘Buddy’ M. Bragg, Jr. at West Rockport. The Bragg’s made their home in West Rockport, where they resided and raised their family, all their married lives.
While raising her family, Lois worked at area factories, before becoming a Tupperware Dealer for more than 30 years. She also served as a personal care giver.
Since 1948, Lois has devoted many hours in service and work at the Washington Advent Christian Camp Ground. With her husband, she served as grounds keeper and later worked with Mrs. Pender in housekeeping at the Campground. Thru that association, Lois became President of the Ladies Aid Society. She later served several years until 2008, as Manager of the boarding house.
Always involved in her Lord’s service, Lois served ten years as a Cub Scout Den Mother and as a board member of the District Council. From 1966 to 1981, she served as a Foster Parent and during that time served on several committees with the foster parents. For several years, she worked on the annual drives for the American Red Cross and American Cancer Society.
She was a member and past Sunday School Superintendent and Youth Director at Advent Christian Church of Chelsea, and served as a Pioneer Girl Leader at West Rockport Baptist Church. More recently, Lois attended the Orffs Corner Community Church in Waldoboro.
Traveling and camping with her family, was a favorite experience for Lois. Her travels included trips to New York, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, New Orleans, Montana, Mississippi, Arizona, North Carolina and Canada. She was thrilled to visit Germany where her son was serving when he was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel.
Over the years, Lois cultivated special friendships with several friends from Deer Isle with whom she grew up and considered as family, including Mary Alice and Douglas Haskell, Chandler and Nita Barbour, Murry and Lois Barbour. She enjoyed a life-long friendship with Vera Townsend who was a neighbor while growing up. Her love extended to Sarah and Scott Minzey of Pittston whom she considered as grandchildren, and to two special cousins Karen and Nancy Lyman of Fayette. For several years, Lois enjoyed the friendship and company of Linwood Thorndike of West Rockport.
Other than her parents, Lois was pre-deceased by her husband ‘Buddy’ in 1994, and a brother Neil C. Colburn, Sr. in 2012, She is survived by five children, Daryl L. Bragg of Waterville, Darlene Manners and her husband Richard of Andover, MA, Debbie L. Samoranos of Port Richie, FL, Dedde B. Radley of Rockland, Duane M. Bragg and his wife Patricia of Frederick, MD; her brother Raye E. Colburn and his wife Sandra of Rockport; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Friday, April 3, 2015, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. A Celebration of Lois Home-Going, will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, at the West Rockport Baptist Church, 545 Park Street, West Rockport. Interment at West Rockport Cemetery, will be at a later date.
