Obituary for Sally Jean Brewster

Sally Jean Brewster
ROCKLAND - Sally J. Brewster, 78, died unexpectedly, Monday, December 1, 2014 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport; her loving family was at her side.
Born in Rockland, August 11, 1936, she was the daughter of Clifford and Eleanor Sylvester Achorn. Educated locally she was a 1953 graduate of Rockland High School. While in high school she was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and took pride in traveling with that group to play at different venues.
Following graduation Sally married her high school sweetheart, soul-mate and best friend, Richard Brewster at
her parents' home in Rockland. Together they have made their home in Rockland their entire married life. Immediately following high school Sally worked at the Registry of Deeds. As her family expanded and her children grew, she later moved on to Van Baalens where she spent many years as an inspector and packager.
After her children were grown, she kept busy watching her grandchildren and relished all their accomplishments. She loved crafting, long before it was hip and before the invention of 'Pinterest' and shared her skills with many people. She took great joy in knitting, crocheting, painting and ceramics.
Later in life Sally continued to share her love of helping others, serving as a crossing guard at Rockland District High School and MacDougal School. She loved seeing and talking with the children, often bringing baskets of candy to share with them on special occasions.
Always up for an adventure, Sally and Richard could be found looking for bargains at Marden's Store, scooping up the best ones, often for other family members. No outing was complete without stopping for lunch at one of her favorite restaurants! She was proud of her ability to locate promotion coupons that let she and Richard have lunch and bargain prices.
Family was Sally's number one priority and she loved any reason to get together. Each year she looked forward to that one special weekend in August when the entire family would gather at her home on Lobster Festival Weekend to stake out great spots to watch the parade. This was a tradition that started many years ago and she continued earlier this year, even while recovering from health issues that she was not going to allow to spoil her day. Even when she wasn't feeling up to a party, she delighted in having her family together as three generations all spent a weekend taking care of her and conducting a 'work day' at her home to celebrate her 60th wedding anniversary to her husband Richard. She reported she could not have had a better anniversary celebration, truly treasuring that family gathering I work party. She had a special place in her heart for her dog 'Molly'. Her family remembered how Molly had picked Sally by climbing into her lap at her granddaughter's bridal shower. That evening Sally took Molly home with her and they were fast friends after that. Although she loved all her family deeply, her heart belonged to her beloved husband, Richard . The two were inseparable, sharing a love that is often not found now-a-days. Even when he was deployed the two stayed in constant contact; she, keeping his letters even to this day. He truly was her best friend and soul-mate.
Sally will be sadly missed by everyone who loved her.
Predeceased by a sister Patricia Achorn; Sally is survived by her husband of 60 years, Richard Brewster of Rockland; her son Rick Brewster and his wife Teresa of Rockland; her daughter Vicki Mitchell and her husband Rick of Rockport; a brother Carl Achorn of Rockport ; a sister Linda Dean and her husband Lanny of Union; five grandchildren, Cheryl Brewster, Timothy Brewster, Nicole Hatch and her husband Craig, Shawna Mitchell and her companion Evan Dyer, Jared Mitchell; as well as two great-grandsons, Asher and Rhys Hatch.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 3:00 to 5:00 PM., Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home. At Sally's request, her family will remember her life privately at an interment service at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 51 US Route One, Suite M, Scarborough, Maine 04074.
