ROCKLAND - Raymond Jacobson, 89, died Friday, August 22, 2014, at Quarry Hill in Camden, following an extended illness.
Born in St. George, September 19, 1924, he was the son of Bror E. and Georgie Smalley Jacobson. He was educated in St. George schools.
Ray enlisted in the US Navy during the early years of World War II. Due to his involvement in several battles and invasions, he was the recipient of medals and awards which included the Bronze Star.
Returning to civilian life, he began employment at the Thomaston Cement Plant, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator for 38 years.
On January 19, 1946, Ray married Doris A. Chaples in Rockland. The couple made their home in St. George for many years before moving to Rockland where they have since resided.
For many years, Ray was a dedicated Scout Master with Boy Scouts Troop 246 in St. George. In later years, he was proud to see his son Robert earn recognition as an Eagle Scout.
He was a member of the Kinney - Melquist American Legion Post, No. 34, St. George, and the Knox County Fish & Game Association.
Besides his parents, Ray was pre-deceased by his son Robert Jacobson in 2012. He is survived by his beloved wife Doris, of Rockland; his daughter-in-law Patsy Jacobson of Farmingdale; two brothers, Donald M. Jacobson and Kenneth A. Jacobson, both of St. George; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Private family burial was held at Achorn Cemetery in Rockland.
