Obituary for Arthur Gray Kinney

ROCKLAND – Arthur G. Kinney, 88, longtime St. George resident, died Friday, July 18, 2014, at the Knox Center, after a long, silent battle against Parkinson’s.
Born at St. George, October 15, 1925, he was one of nine children of James R. and Emma Coltart Kinney. Educated in local schools, he was a 1944 graduate of St. George High School.
A World War II, U.S. Navy Veteran, Arthur served in the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters as a Motor Machinist’s Mate.
On February 28, 1947, he married Corinne Smith in Rockland. The couple made their home in St. George for 65 years.
In earlier years, he worked as a clerk at area auto parts stores. He later managed Art’s Lobster in Tenants Harbor. In 1978 he built Echo Hill at Wiley’s Corner, and with his wife operated that facility until selling in 1984.
Long recognized as a skilled and meticulous craftsman, for the next several years, he did carpenter work with his brother Austin and worked on his own in that capacity.
From 1947 to 1956, Arthur followed one of his passions as a pitcher with the St. George Torpedos. For a time he also served as manager of that team. A photo of that team has since been published in the newspaper as well as used in other St. George historical publications. Golfing was another of his sports interest and he enjoyed friendships made through his membership at Goose River Golf Club in Rockport.
He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, St. George Lodge, No.132, and a member of Kinney – Melquist American Legion Post No. 34 in Tenants Harbor.
Arthur was pre-deceased by a son, Gary Alfred Kinney in 1947; son-in-law Daniel Bryant in 2008; and three brothers, Austin Kinney, James Kinney, and Charles Kinney. Besides his wife Corinne of 67 years of Rockland, he is survived by four children, Diane Bryant of Thomaston, Joanne “Cookie” Kenney and her husband Gary of Rockland, Dale Arthur Kinney and his wife Victoria of Portland, Kerry Henrikson and her fiancé Tim Lyford of Presque Isle; one brother, Alfred Kinney and his wife Pearl of Reno, Nevada; four sisters, Virginia Wall of Tenants Harbor, Louise Ervin of St. George, Elosia Hupper of Tenants Harbor, Alice Frye and her husband Donald of Rockport; a sister-in-law Louise Kinney of Spruce Head; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at North Parish Cemetery, Snows Point Road, Wiley’s Corner, St. George. The Rev. Walden Chandler will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Knox Center for Long Term Care, Employee Appreciation Fund, 6 White Street, Rockland, ME 04841.
