Obituary for Helen W. Shields Grant (Shields)

Helen W. Shields Grant (Shields)
ROCKLAND - Helen W. Shields Grant, 76, formerly of North Haven, died Sunday, February 23, 2014, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, after a brief illness.
Born on Vinalhaven, November 20, 1937, she was the daughter of Victor and Doris Fifield Shields. As a young girl, Helen moved with her family to North Haven where her father served as community physician. She was educated on the island.
On September 3, 1955 Helen married Hubert Grant in Stonington. Together they moved to Sacramento, California, residing there until 1959.
Returning to North Haven, Helen spent most of her time raising her family while working for several island families during the summers.
In the fall of 1980 Helen moved to Rockland where she has since resided. For twenty-two years Helen worked in the deli at Puffin-Stop in Rockland. There she enjoyed the many friends she made while engaging in casual bantering with her regular customers.
Helen loved to keep busy and took pleasure in reading, walking and playing the slot machines, often taking trips to Foxwoods. She was a very social person and could often be found visiting with fellow residents, and providing transportation for many. Helen will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Predeceased by her sister Jane Shields in 1976; Helen is survived by her son, Jonathan S. Grant and his wife Karen of North Haven; her daughters, Lisa Grant of Marblehead, Massachusetts, Marilyn Grant of Rockland; her brother Richard Shields and his wife Lisa of North Haven; and several nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 9:00 to 11:00 Friday morning, February 28th, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Private interment will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Friends of Rockland Public Library, P.O. Box 764, Rockland, ME 04841.
