SOUTH THOMSATON - David S. ‘Oakesey’ Oakes, 46, a true Captain and hero, died doing what he loved, off the shores of Cape Ann in Massachusetts, after saving his son-in-law, Jason’s life, Friday October 25, 2013.

Born in Rockland, August 31, 1967, he was the son of Bernard ‘Sonny’, Jr. and Elizabeth Scott Oakes. Educated locally, he was a 1986 graduate of Rockland District High School.

Following high school David became a truck driver, driving for U.R. Illvonen, Ferraiolo’s, Atwoods and at one time owned his own trucking company, ‘Dirty Girl Trucking’. Later David began his career as a commercial fisherman, fishing for the O’Hara Corporation and Eastern Fisheries off New Bedford.

He was an avid outdoorsman and even when not working loved being on the water. He took great pleasure in fishing for brook trout, motorcycle riding and snowmobile riding. He was most happy when he was ‘going fast’. His quote ‘Go 110 or go home’ sums up his outlook on life.

He had a heart of gold and wanted to help anyone he could. He was a good natured jokester, and loved playing jokes on and antagonizing his family, especially his nieces. He never missed the opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren. Keeping his crew members laughing and smiling on especially long trips was one of Oakesey’s specialties.

David has set sail for his final port, and his passing leaves those he loved battered by the waves, but hopeful for the calm waters of peaceful memories.

Predeceased by his father Bernard ‘Sonny’ Oakes, Jr.; he is survived by his mother Elizabeth Oakes of South Thomaston; his children, Amanda Oakes, Randi Randall and her husband Jason, Ashley Oakes all of Rockland, Amanda Coley of Pennsylvania, Duncan Oakes of South Thomaston; his sister Terry Nelsen and her husband Joe, Sr. of South Thomaston; five grandchildren, Brady Woodbury, Tyler Randall, Sophia Randall, Erica Coley, and Donald; nieces, Holly Nelsen of Yorktown, VA, Chantae Eaton, Megan Eaton both of Rockland; nephew Joseph Nelsen, Jr. of Warren; the mother of his children and his good friend Tammy Oakes of Rockland; a sister-in-law Karen Eaton of Rockland; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, November 1, 2013 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a celebration of his life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 2, 2013. The Reverend Wayne Sawyer will officiate.
