CUSHING - William Henry Young, 82, died Monday, September 16, 2013, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
William, also known as Bill, was born in Thomaston, September 30, 1930, the son of Walter D. and Lucy A. Sukeforth Young. He attended Cushing and Thomaston schools.
He married Vera F. Chapman in Cushing, October 15, 1949. The couple made their home in Thomaston with their three children, before moving to Cushing with their family, where they have since resided.
Bill was employed at Dragon Cement Plant for 10 years. Changing careers to do what he loved best; being on the water as a self-employed lobster fisherman out of Cushing. His first boat was named after his wife, the ‘Vicki Faye’, and his last boat of 41 years was named after his first granddaughter, the ‘Tammy M’. During his lobstering career, Bill also enjoyed scalloping and shrimping. He enjoyed spending time out in the woods during the winter months, cutting wood and working with his neighbor Richard Olson, hauling wood out for him to split and pile.
An avid outdoorsman, Bill enjoyed camping trips with his family, hunting and snowmobiling trips up in the Northern woods, with his wife, Vera, brother Dennis and his wife Jan. He also enjoyed fishing trips on various Maine lakes with his son Ronnie, son-in-law Danny and close friends. He always looked forward to taking Thursdays off to go bass fishing with his good friends Albert Simmons and Leroy Fetteroli.
An avid reader in his later years, he enjoyed all of Linda Greenlaw’s books, as well as Elisabeth Ogilvie and books pertaining to Mid-Coast Maine and lobstering.
In his earlier years, Bill would often get together with family and friends to play mostly country songs on his guitar, and often played special songs for his children.
Bill was a 58 year member of the Supreme Lodge, Knights of Pythias in Thomaston. For several years he served as a volunteer firefighter with the Thomaston Fire Department. After moving to Cushing he joined the Cushing Fire Department, and from 1971 to 1979 served as Fire Warden and Fire Chief. He was instrumental in the building of the new Fire and Rescue building and aided in the purchase of Cushing’s lime green fire truck.
He particularly loved eating at Wasses Hot Dog’s and Mt. Battie Take-Out.
