Obituary for Barbara Louise Nowland (Kinney)

Barbara Louise Nowland (Kinney)
EAST VASSALBORO - Barbara Kinney Nowland, 82, passed away December 28, 2012, at the Knox Center for Long-Term Care in Rockland after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Barbara was born in Gardiner on June 29, 1930, the daughter of Ruth B. and Edwin H. Kinney. She graduated from Gardiner Area High School in 1947.

Barbara was a devoted wife, daughter, mother, and grandmother.

Barbara and Maland were married February 12, 1949 in Randolph. They attended St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waterville and St. Mark’s in Augusta for many years. She worked at Scott Paper, and later at the Foreign Language Department at Colby College for 20 years.

She led an active lifestyle that included skiing, sailing, snowshoeing, and square dancing. Later in life she walked daily. Barbara was an avid reader and volunteered at the Vassalboro Public Library. She loved music and playing the piano. She enjoyed summers at camp surrounded by family, and later Barbara and Maland often wintered in Arizona, where she volunteered at the local library.

As a young person she learned the values of living responsibly and using one's mind. It was important to Barbara to be useful - her strong sense of helpfulness shone through even as she battled later stages of Alzheimer's disease. Perhaps above all she is remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor.

Barbara is predeceased by her son Stephen K. Nowland, brother David Kinney, and sisters Alice Smith and Mary Murphy. She is survived by husband Maland C. Nowland of Vassalboro; daughter Stacey A. O’Connor and husband Dan of Rockland; grandson Jacob Stephen O’Connor of Rockland; and sisters Bethany L. Kinney of Randolph and Ruth E. Kopp of Vassalboro.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Woodlands Assisted Living and Knox Center for Long-Term Care. In accordance with Barbara’s wishes, no services will be held.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
