ST. GEORGE - Walter Drinkwater, Jr. passed away on October 6, 2023, at the Sussman House in Rockport.
Born May 10, 1929, he was the son of Virginia E. Wheeler and Walter Drinkwater, Sr. He was raised by his grandparents Jasper and Bess Drinkwater. Walt spent his entire life in Spruce Head and Hewitt's Island.
He attended Rockland High School, where he met the love of his life, Edith Dunbar. They married in May of 1949. Edie passed away on March 8, 2021. They lived together in the same house for 72 years. Walt and Edie had 2 children, Terri Hall and Gene Drinkwater. Gene passed away on August 23, 2015 and it was an inconsolable loss for both of them.
Walt was an athlete and lettered in all four sports at Rockland High School. He also played semi- pro baseball for the St. George team for many years with many wins under his belt. He coached the St. George Sparks farm team as well. A little later in life he played and coached Rockland Softball. He bowled in Rockland and Eastern Leagues. His life would have been incomplete without sports. In later years he followed his grandchildren to all their sports functions, driving the "grandmothers."
Walt was a devout lobsterman at Graffam Island/Little Hurricane Island from the age of 7 to 86. He was also a Past Master at the Eureka Lodge of Masons in the Keag his entire adult life.
Walt leaves behind his daughter Terri; her 3 children, Courtnie and her companion Chris, Bria and James and his companion Deidre; great grandchildren, Tyde, Kurt, Greg, Walter and Mavis; his daughter in law, Janet (Gene's wife); her children, Blair, Westley and his wife Kasey and Maggie; great grandchildren, Chloe and Reese Drinkwater.
There will be a celebration of life in the Spring when the flowers bloom again.
Love ya. You be good!
