Roger Bernard Hannan

–

Rockland, Maine

Roger "Gummah" Hannan, 78, of Rockland died peacefully at home on June 14th after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by those who loved him, including his pets; Henry, Freya, Duncan, and Radar.

He was born on March 21, 1943 to Ivory and Marie Philbrook Hannan in Thomaston, Me. He attended Thomaston schools before beginning his life as a truck driver, something he knew early on that he wanted to do.

Roger had a special bond with his older brother, Robert " Bobby" Hannan. They spent, most of their time fixing up old cars, only to wreck them while drag racing. Then they would do it all over again. He also enjoyed putting together model cars. He had several that are stored away to give to his grandson when he is older.

He worked for many companies as a truck driver but worked for George C Hall & sons until he retired to care for his wife in 2012. He wasn't just a truck driver though. He could run just about any of the equipment he came across. If you asked any of his coworkers they would tell you, Roger was the first one there in the morning and the last one to leave at night. He would drive the fuel truck on Saturdays and clean the office on Sundays. He was dedicated and would do anything for anyone. George ( Hall) knew that he could always depend on Roger to get things done. He thought of him as a very good friend and that friendship lived on with George's son, Tim.

Roger married the love of his life on May 13, 1969. They moved around Maine before settling down in Rockland. When she became sick, he retired to care for her at home. Never left her side.

During the last year of his life, he was cared for by his daughter, Gisele. Their days were spent going on road trips, stopping at Beth's Farm for some cheese and homemade donuts, getting his favorite drink at Dunkin, going to see Matthew running the excavator, and of course playing with his great grandchildren.

Roger looked forward to his Thursday visits from his grandson, Ryan. Always brought him scratch tickets and the newspaper. They would sit and read through the court news, see if he knew anyone. Also, his weekly visits from his special "granddaughter, Shekara Davis". She would bring him something special every week. She was a huge help and he loved it.

Monday nights we would go have dinner with Annie Tyler of South Thomaston. He so looked forward to going over. They became great friends .

Roger had a special relationship with his son-in-law to be, Matthew Tyler. He looked forward to seeing him every day to talk. They would talk to each other on the CB as well. A week before he passed, he held Matthew's hand and said "you mean the world to me". Anyone that knew him, knew what it took for him to say that.

One of his proudest moments was seeing his granddaughter get married. We weren't sure if he would be strong enough to attend but with God's will, he did.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 44 years, Jane Royer Hannan; his daughter, Yvette Tarbox ; his brothers Norman, Bernard, and Bob; and his sister, Blanche Bunnel.
He is survived by his daughter, Gisele Hannan of Rockland and her fiance Matthew Tyler of South Thomaston; son, Keith Royer of Rockland: stepdaughter, Yvonne Reed and her husband Charles of Waldoboro. Grandchildren; Kaitlin Tyler; Ashlea Lindsey and her husband Cote; Ivory Tyler; Charles Reed II; Jennifer Royer; Ryan Royer; Deven Royer; Jane Young and her husband John; Harold Tarbox III; Winona Tarbox; and Derek Reed; a very special sister in law, Shirley Simmons. Great grandchildren; Noctis, Chloe, Timmy, Johnny, Jayce, Lily, Chase, Ayla, and Kaiden.

A private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County and the Cancer Care Center at PBMC would be greatly appreciated.2b:[]
