CUSHING - John W. Bowen II, 42, passed away unexpectedly aboard his beloved sailboat, the S/V Ondine, in Rockland Harbor on Sunday, June 20, 2021.
His life was filled with experience and love. He was a reader and philosopher; a sailor; a Captain; a farmer; a fisherman; a traveler; a best friend; a co-pilot; a builder and tinkerer; a loved partner; a comfort to many. He was practical but not always sensible. He knew how to have a good time better than most. He never ever went anywhere and didn't find a friend or kindred spirit.
Maine was where he had stopped for now (with dreams of sailing the Ondine across the ocean). Along the way, he had found homes in Illinois, Missouri, California, Pennsylvania, Florida and Alaska.
Predeceased by his mother Cheryl; maternal grandparents Lyle and Ruth Ferguson; and paternal grandparents John A Bowen and Kathryn P Speckhart. He is survived by his father, John W. Bowen I; his sister, Sara Bowen (Lasisi); his brother, Michael Bowen; sister, Mary Carella; nephews, Kyron Bowen, Alexander Bowen, Nickolas Carella; nieces, Krysten Carella, Kaytrien Bowen, Carsyn Bowen.
He has also left behind his partner, Laura Castetter; his dog, Jake ('the greatest dog there is'); and best friend, Matthew Kamnick.
He left his mark on so many people in so many places. We are only left with memories now and many that were only his and yours. If you have a story, memory, tall tale about John that you can share, his family and friends would appreciate the gift as something to hold onto.
Gatherings to celebrate his life will be held in the places he loved at a later date and will be announced by his family.
If you so wish, donations in John's memory can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 4550 Montgomery Ave. Suite 1100 N, Bethesda, MD 20814 or online at https://cff.org/2b:[]
