Edelen, 78, died Thursday, August 22, 2002, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport after an extended illness.Born in Great Lakes, Illinois, July 18, 1924, he was the son of John R. and Suzanne Keller Edelen.He earned an undergraduate degree at Georgetown University and later earned a PHD from Harvard University.Mr. Edelen was World War II, U.S. Army Veteran.On June 29, 1957, he married Virginia K. Rhinelander at Cambridge, Massachusetts.For more than 42 years he served as a Professor of English at Indiana University.Besides his wife of 45 years, Mr. Edelen is survived by one daughter, Susan E. Edelen of Ipswich, MA; two sons, Philip D. Edelen of Ventura, CA, Frederick R. Edelen and his wife Christina of Houston, TX, as well as four grandchildren, Michael, Georges, Nicholas and Zachary.A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 30, at St. Bernards Catholic Church, 150 Broadway, Rockland. The Reverend Mark Reinhardt will officiate. Private interment will be on Vinalhaven at a later date.Arrangements are with the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
