Rockland, Maine
Frank J. Langley passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on August 6, 2026, surrounded by family at his home in Rockport, Maine. Frank was born in London, England, on November 16, 1929. While still a boy, his family moved to the Isle of Wight, seeking relief from London's notorious fogs, which were particularly difficult for his father, who had survived mustard gas while serving in World War I.
Frank's lifelong fascination with electronics began as a teenager during World War II, when he taught himself to build and repair radios for his family and neighbors. After graduating from college in London, he began his engineering career at a firm in Cheltenham, England, where he worked on flight simulation systems. It was there that he met Margaret, whom he married, and together they welcomed their first daughter.
Frank and Margaret shared a sense of adventure, and in 1960s they immigrated to North America aboard the RMS Queen Mary. Their second and third daughters were born in Canada. Soon afterwards, Frank was recruited to join America's burgeoning space program. His engineering work contributed to NASA's Gemini and Apollo missions, bringing the young family to Sarasota, Florida, where they embraced the warmth, sunshine, and the largely undeveloped white-sand beaches.
Frank's career later took the family to Massachusetts, where he continued to pursue his passion for engineering, invention, and new ideas. He was a lifelong problem-solver who was happiest when tackling a difficult technical challenge. Along the way, he obtained several patents and developed ideas that would eventually lead to his own company.
Frank loved hands-on projects and often included his daughters in them. He helped them craft a fifty-foot-long dragon kite for a festival, restored a Jaguar XKE 120, taking his daughters on road rallies, and built a balance beam so they could practice gymnastics at home. Hiking and cross-country skiing were favorite family activities during their years in Massachusetts.
At the age of 62, Frank founded Optomistic Products, building on one of his patented inventions. His inventive spirit remained undiminished and at age 82, he obtained his final patent--a testament to the ingenuity, curiosity, and intellect that characterized his entire life.
Frank also had a deep passion for the arts and a particular affection for St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where he spent his winters. In 2001, he established the St. John Festival of the Arts. With the energy and determination of a man half his age, every year for twenty years, Frank brought together local musicians, storytellers, dancers, artists and artisans for a celebration of the island's culture and creative spirit. The Festival became a beloved tradition for both residents and visitors, continuing until the pandemic brought it to a close.
In 2013, Frank moved to Camden, Maine, to be closer to his grandchildren. He cherished his family and loved any excuse for a celebration, invariably arriving with a big cake and a bottle of bubbles.
Frank is survived by his loving daughters, Catherine, Juliet, and Alison, his son and daughter-law, John Whitman and Brenen Guyol, his former wife, Margaret, and his grandchildren, Alexander and Iselin. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Doreen Hughes.
Frank lived a life marked by curiosity, ingenuity, adventure, creativity, generosity and an abiding love for his family. He never seemed to outgrow his determination to build, invent, create, and share. He will be deeply missed.
