Francis "Frank" Maher

–

Rockland, Maine

OWL'S HEAD - Francis 'Frank' H. Maher, 92, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 14, 2026, at Breakwater Commons in Rockland. Born in Newfoundland on March 9, 1934, he was the son of Patrick Joseph and Margaret Quigley Maher of Flatrock. He was predeceased by both of his parents, his wife, Anne Judith (Orosz) Maher, and all of his siblings, Douglas Maher, Joseph Maher, Katherine Scroggin, Stanislaus Maher, Patsy Maher and John Maher.
Frank grew up on a farm with his family and remembered going to market in a horse and cart as a child and buying a pig from Joey Smallwood who would go on to serve as prime minister. He went to school in St. John, where he served as part of the Canadian Marine Service. Eventually he and his siblings would all leave Canada to settle in the United States. After his first job selling encyclopedias in Boston, he met and became friends with Bob and Dottie Liberty. In the mid-'60s, Frank moved to Rockland, where he managed the Red Jacket restaurant at the Trade Winds hotel. There he met local Anne Orosz, and the two married in 1968. The couple went on to have four children, all of whom survive.
For a child who watched the advent of the automobile, cars were an early obsession and remained a lifelong interest for Frank. He worked with Linwood Moody for many years selling cars at Moody's dealership in Rockland's north end, and when Moody's closed, he spent many more years at Sheppard Toyota. He was a trusted salesman to whom many customers (and vehicles) returned again and again.
Later in life, Frank liked to spend time walking in his Ash Point Drive neighborhood, gardening, and enjoying the sun on his deck with his rescue cats. Every Sunday, he'd call to check in on his children who were all living out of state or abroad. Just as his oldest sister Kay would always call him to start the week, he carried on that tradition when each of his children moved away from home. He was also a wonderful Grampy, who loved to spend time with his grandchildren, singing songs and reading books.
Frank was known for his sharp wit, tales from the turnip truck, championship cribbage chops, love for the crossword, and steadfast devotion to family and home. Frank is survived by all of his children: Peter Maher of Falmouth, Mass.; Patrick Maher of Hope; Jennifer Maher Steele and husband Greg of New York and Owl's Head; Susannah Maher of Rockland; and Julia Maher and husband Clovis Anjard of Owl's Head; his grandchildren, Rhiannon Maher of Mashpee, Mass.; Savannah Peters and husband Loring Schaible of Edgewood, N.M.; Ryan, Trevor and Callum Steele of New York and Owl's Head; Anne Anjard Maher of Owl's Head; and great-grandson Micah Peters Schaible of Edgewood, N.M.; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Mass to celebrate his life will take place on Friday, May 22, at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard's Parish, 150 Broadway, Rockland. In lieu of flowers, please donate to support St. Bernard's Soup Kitchen where Frank was a volunteer.
