OWLS HEAD - Clyde Melvin Smith, 96, from Owl's Head, and most recently, Brunswick, passed peacefully on Thursday, October 12, 2023. He was surrounded by his loving son Jeff and the exceptionally caring staff at Coastal Shores Assisted Living Center, and Chans Hospice.
Clyde was born in Thomaston on June 22, 1927, to John and Clara Smith. He resided in the Thomaston/Rockland area of Midcoast Maine for many years and lived in Owl's Head until June of 2021 with his wife.
A Naval Veteran of WWII, and the Korean War, Clyde was honored in a small, private Military Graveside service at Achorn Cemetery on November 9th. Present were his immediate family. The Rev. Wayne Sawyer from the Thomaston Baptist Church officiated.
Clyde worked at Dragon Cement plant for most of his career as a Heavy Equipment Operator, later retiring from there. Anyone who knew him will tell you that he could not stand still and just grow old, so he went back to work! He joined the staff at Shepherd Motors in Thomaston and worked there until the age of 89. He loved to drive (cars, buses, and even received his single engine pilot's license), collect coins, hang out with the guys, and was a member of both the Elks Club and the American Legion in Rockland. While he didn't often speak about his days in the service, which he joined at the age of 18, he participated in an Honor Flight trip with Jeff in the Spring of 2019 and visited our Nation's Memorials. It was the Trip of a Lifetime for them both. Clyde had a smile that would light up the room, and he particularly loved listening to music, reading, and receiving visitors while at Coastal Shores. In the past few years, he enjoyed attending church and was baptized in September of 2022.
Clyde will be greatly missed by his family and those closest to him. He was deeply loved and will be most remembered for his great smile. He is predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Barbara; his daughter Kelly Smith Glena; his parents John and Clara Smith; and his brothers, Lloyd, Charles, Frank, and Donald. He is survived by his only son Jeff Smith and his wife Anne; grandson Benjamin Smith and his wife Melanie; son-in-law John Glena; grandsons, David Glena, Dylan Birch, and Leonard (LJ) Jurs; great-grandchildren, Gunnar and Blakely Smith; and several nieces and nephews. His greatest wish was to be reunited with Barbara. That wish has been granted, and now their souls are together once again.
