Obituary for Edward A. Ingalls, Jr.

Edward A. Ingalls, Jr.
PORT CLYDE, MAINE - Edward Allan Ingalls, Jr., 82, died Saturday, March 3, 2007 following a brief illness at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
Born in Bradford, Massachusetts, June 11, 1924, he was the son of Edward A. and Mildred Peabody Ingalls.
Following graduation from Haverhill (MA) High School in 1942, he voluntarily joined the United States Army in 1943. He served with the 574th Anti-aircraft Artillery Battalion in the European Theater of Operations, from 1944 to 1946 during the Battle of the Bulge. His name is inscribed on the Wall of Liberty in Normandy, France.
Following his Army service, he graduated from Macintosh Business College in Haverhill, MA. His primary occupation was as a Manufacturers' Representative in the New England shoe industry.
He resided and raised his family in Plaistow, NH, where he served on the Plaistow Industrial Commission, worked tirelessly to establish the Timberlane Regional School District and was a foster parent for the New Hampshire Child and Family Service Agency.
When the family moved to Exeter, NH in 1983, they divided their time between Exeter and their summer home in Port Clyde, to which they moved permanently in 2003. In Exeter, he volunteered at the Exeter Hospital and was active in the Exeter Baptist Church.
Since moving to Port Clyde, he served as a Deacon at the Port Clyde Baptist Church, was a member of the Port Clyde Sailing Club and enjoyed volunteering at the Marshall Point Lighthouse.
Ed's great interest and loves were his family, jazz, and sailing, sailing, sailing. His interest in sailing began as a teenager when he discovered that one could, "go from one place to another moved only by the force of nature." He loved "the challenge of the wind and sea."
His irrepressible love of life was evident to all who knew him and his boundless good humor was a joy to all.
Ed enjoyed a close relationship with two people whom he considered to be like his own children, Sabra Burdick of Freeport and Kendall Pritchard of Wellesley, MA.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jane Ayer Ingalls of Port Clyde; daughters Weslie Ann "Sandy" Mackenzie and her husband Dr. Malcolm W. Mackenzie of Nelson Village, NH, Catherine P. Ingalls of Freeport; a son Edward A. "Toby" Ingalls, III, of Portland; two brothers Robert Ingalls of Springfield, VT, David Ingalls of Boxford, MA; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 17, 2007 at the Port Clyde Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Port Clyde Baptist Church, Port Clyde, ME 04860 or St. George Ambluance and Firefighters Assn., P.O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, Maine 04860.
