Print
ROCKLAND - Charles I. Kurr, 69, was welcomed home to heaven on October 5, 2018 after a courageous battle with lymphoma with his son at his side. He will live on forever in our hearts. Born on February 4, 1949, he was the son of Robert L. Kurr and Dorothy Ryan Kurr. Charles was a member of the class of 1967 at Rockland District High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Harvey Kurr. Together they raised two children in the home he built. Charlie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Charles joined the U.S. Army in 1968 and served in Korea and Vietnam. He received an Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service while serving in Vietnam and other written commendations from his company commanders.

After his military service he became a firefighter for the Rockland Fire Department, working his way up to Lieutenant and later Assistant Chief. He retired in 1997. While on the department he was a member of Professional Firefighters Association Local #1584, Maine Fire Chiefs Association, vice president of the department’s union, a member of the Search and Rescue team and a Driver Training Instructor. He was often recognized by the Rockland City Council for being instrumental in saving the city thousands of dollars in repairs and rebuilding of equipment and vehicles. He believed in leading by example.

Charlie did construction work on his days off from the department and became a master carpenter with great attention to detail. He took immense pride in his work. He was also a lobsterman. After retirement from the fire department he worked for several local contractors.

For the last five years Charlie and Pat spent their winters in Florida where they made many new friends and had many great adventures together. While in Florida he took up golf with his Florida buddies which he greatly enjoyed. He was also an avid Red Sox fan.

His greatest joy in life was spending time with his three grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Charlie was a great story teller and enjoyed entertaining his family and friends with stories of his many adventures. He was always willing to do anything to help out anyone needing assistance.

Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by four siblings, Shirley Linscott, Jesse Linscott, Jane Powell and Betty Grierson. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Kurr; his daughter Karen Miles of Belfast; his son Michael Kurr of Dover, NH; his daughter-in-law, Nicole Kurr of Dover, NH and his three grandchildren, Nathan, Noah and Mallory Kurr also of Dover, NH; four brothers, Loy Linscott, Robert Kurr, Frank Kurr, and Jesse Kurr; two sisters, Martha Moody and Barbara McDonald, their spouses and partners, many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 PM, Monday, October 29, 2018 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A reception will follow next door at 104 Limerock from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.
