THOMASTON – Judith A. Chapman, 77, died surrounded by her loving family, following a brief illness, Sunday, September 9, 2018 at the home of her daughter.

Born in Rockland, July 1, 1941, she was the daughter of Mervin and Kathleen Nosworthy Harriman. Educated locally, Judith was a 1959 graduate of Rockland High School.

Following high school Judith worked for several years at Holmes Packing, Port Clyde Canning and North Lubec Packing. She took great joy in all of these jobs, especially being able to work alongside her beloved sister, sharing a table. The sisters were thrilled to work together one summer at the High Tide Inn, once owned by the Conover’s. Judith’s favorite employment was for Mrs. Huston as a housekeeper. Often she assisted with dinner and cocktail parties learning the art of table setting and etiquette. These skills served her well, and Judy was always a poised and proper woman. She used her eye for fashion and beauty while owning the Fashion Exchange Thrift Store in Rockland with her daughter.

On September 4, 1987 Judith married William Chapman, Retired Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy. Together they enjoyed spending winters in Florida where Judith enjoyed doing yoga at the Club House. During this time, Judy was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mr. Chapman passed away in 2015.

Judy’s family would like to thank all of the staff at MaineHealth Care at Home Hospice for their excellent care; and everyone at Sarah’s House, the Cancer Hospitality House Judy and her daughter utilized during her treatments in Brewer. Judy was so grateful for and comforted by their presence and mission. They also could not say enough about the personal care and attention she received at the LaFayette Cancer Center in Brewer, or all the help they received from Waldo County Community Action Partners.

Judy will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

Predeceased by her sisters, Sandra Gray in 1980 and Carolyn Belyea in 2005; and her husband in 2015; Judith is survived by her children, Wendy VanDine and her husband Lee of Thomaston, Harold Clarke, Jr. and his companion Francesca Makinen of Camden, Steven Clarke of Rockland, Jill-Ann Sullivan and her husband Robert of Thomaston, Jackie Lynn Madore; three step-children, Samantha Zdrojewsky of Goose Creek, S.C., Walter Chapman of Rockland, Shawn Chapman and his wife Diana of Thomaston; a friend whom she considered a daughter, Laurie Miller of Rockland; two nieces, Tammy Gray of Warren, Kathleen Jones of Washington; 12 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A graveside celebration of Judy’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2018 at Achorn Cemetery, Old County Road, Rockland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sarah’s House, 346 Main Road, Holden, ME 04429.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
