UNION – Stanley Harold Metcalf, 80, retired BMCS, USCG, died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at the Sussman House in Rockport, Sunday, August 26, 2018.
Born in Calais, November 19, 1937, he was the son of William Henry and Dorothy W. Holland Metcalf. He began school in Eastport and after moving to South Portland at a young age, graduated from Portland High School.
From 1954 to 1957, he served in the U.S. Army. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Stan enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard, where he served until his retirement as Boatswain’s Mate Senior Chief Petty Officer in 1978. During his Coast Guard career, Stan saw service aboard the USCG Cutters Point Mast, Garnet, Swivel and Eastwind. He was stationed at Burnt Island Light and from 1968 to 1969 saw duty as Captain of a Gunboat in the Republic of Vietnam. He later served at Coast Guard Station Rockland, Group Southwest Harbor, Race Point Search & Rescue and Portsmouth Station Search & Rescue.
Always proud that his father was a WWI recipient of the Canadian Victoria Cross, Stan himself was a decorated veteran as recipient of 3 Bronze Stars and the Meritorious Service Medal.
Since his retirement, Stan has remained active as a member of the VFW or American Legion posts wherever he lived. More recently he was a member of the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion Post No. One in Rockland. Stan was also a life member of the Canadian Scottish Regimental Association of Victoria.
Stan held a lifetime license as an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an accomplished artist, woodworker and at one time was a restaurateur in Bucksport. He was a longtime board member and volunteer of the Maine Lighthouse Museum.
Other than his parents, Stan was pre-deceased by two brothers, Scott and Stuart, and one sister, Sheila Iacono. He is survived by his beloved companion and fiancée Dorothy Black of Union; his children, John S. Metcalf and his wife Ann of Rollinsford, NH, Richard G. Metcalf and his wife Deborah of Eliot, Stan H. Metcalf and his wife Carol of Seabrook, NH, Marianne H. Thompson and her companion Edward Scully of Coxsackie, NY, Joseph Wyman and his wife Wanda of Union, James Wyman (Franny) of Rotonda, FL; 25 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Military Honors will be presented at twelve o’clock Noon, Saturday, September 8, 2018, at the entrance to the Maine Lighthouse Museum, One Park Drive, Rockland, where a Celebration of Life will immediately follow in the Museum. Chief Warrant Officer 4, Paul Dilger, USCG Ret. will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sussman House, C/O Pen Bay Waldo Healthcare Foundation, 22 White Street, Rockland, ME 04841. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
