UNION – Stanley Harold Metcalf, 80, retired BMCS, USCG, died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, at the Sussman House in Rockport, Sunday, August 26, 2018.

Born in Calais, November 19, 1937, he was the son of William Henry and Dorothy W. Holland Metcalf. He began school in Eastport and after moving to South Portland at a young age, graduated from Portland High School.

From 1954 to 1957, he served in the U.S. Army. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Stan enlisted in the U. S. He was stationed at Burnt Island Light and from 1968 to 1969 saw duty as Captain of a Gunboat in the Republic of Vietnam. He later served at Coast Guard Station Rockland, Group Southwest Harbor, Race Point Search & Rescue and Portsmouth Station Search & Rescue.

Always proud that his father was a WWI recipient of the Canadian Victoria Cross, Stan himself was a decorated veteran as recipient of 3 Bronze Stars and the Meritorious Service Medal.

More recently he was a member of the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion Post No. One in Rockland. Stan was also a life member of the Canadian Scottish Regimental Association of Victoria.

Stan held a lifetime license as an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an accomplished artist, woodworker and at one time was a restaurateur in Bucksport. He was a longtime board member and volunteer of the Maine Lighthouse Museum.
