Obituary for Richard Seaman

ROCKLAND – Richard H. Seaman, 93, died peacefully, Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born in Rockland, October 10, 1924, he was the son of Horace and Madeline Wood Seaman. Educated locally, he was a graduate of Rockland High School.

Following high school, Mr. Seaman enlisted in the U.S. Air Force serving in the China-Burma-India Theater as an aircraft radio operator/mechanic and aerial gunner. His service included operating airborne transmitting and receiving equipment and sending and receiving messages in Morse Code as well as servicing the equipment while in flight. During one bombing mission Richard’s plane was shot down. He was the sole survivor of the ten man crew, earning him the Bronze Star Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

Later in life, Mr. Seaman married Marilyn Dudley in 1976. Together they resided in Connecticut for many years where he was employed as a plant foreman by Sikorsky Aircraft. After retirement, Dick and Marilyn returned to Maine where they both grown up, settling in Owls Head.

A quiet individual, he greatly enjoyed flying and working on his airplanes and many cars.

Predeceased by his wife Marilyn, Mr. Seaman is survived by his brother Charles E. Seaman of Boston, MA; his nephews, James Seaman of Leawood, Kansas, Richard Sidelinger of Shelton, Connecticut; and his niece Sandra Reynolds of Fairbanks, Alaska.

A celebration of Mr. Seaman’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 24, 2018 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Camden.
