Obituary for Alice Wheaton Friedrich

OWLS HEAD - Alice Wheaton Friedrich, 79, was taken by the Lord, Thursday, August 2, 2018 peacefully yet suddenly by natural causes.

She was born August 12, 1938 in Princeton, Maine to Basil T. and Ethel G. (Penney) Wheaton.

She graduated from Princeton High School and immediately moved to Bangor, beginning her life long career as an executive secretary.

Her meticulous accounting and office management skills gained her much respect and enabled her to climb the ladder and work for Higgins Insurance Company of Bangor.

She then met her husband Herbert K. ‘Fred’ Friedrich. Together they had one son, Robin.

Moving to the Rockland area, Alice worked for Marine Colloids for ten years. She had a close working relationship with Parker Laite and Nick Pellicani.

In 1973 she moved with her family to Chatham, NY, just outside of Albany, where she began her 20 year career with Niagara Mohawk Power Company. During this time she lost her beloved husband Fred to cancer in 1986. Retiring in 1996 she chose to come back to the place she loved the most, the Maine coast. She settled in Owls Head and enjoyed her home there for the remainder of her time on this earth. Even during retirement, she worked part-time in the business office at Bancroft until it closed. She truly enjoyed retired life, hosting many holiday dinners with family and close friends.

Alice was a passionate advocate for animals, donating her time and money to the local shelters. She enjoyed working in her yard and took pride in everything she did.

Alice also appreciated and loved the arts, often making her rounds to all the local art shows. She was a true lover of Maine and all things Maine made, from wines of our area vineyards to the organic farms that produced specialty hand-made items, to sea glass creations and jewelry. She loved being surrounded by beautiful artwork in her home. She also loved music and dancing. Her first and fore-most love was her son, Robin, always humbly talking about him and his great accomplishments over the years.

Her family will miss her beautiful smile, her fun loving personality, and her willingness to help all who crossed her path.

She was predeceased by her parents Ethel and Basil Wheaton and her husband Fred. She is survived by her son Robin Friedrich of Houston, Texas, her sister Linda (John) Cummings of Owls Head; her brothers, David Wheaton of Palm Bay, FL, Tommy Wheaton of Thomaston; several nieces and nephews, Heather Wheaton, Thomas Wheaton, Chad Wheaton, Aaron Wheaton, Joel Harshaw, Randy Harshaw, Dennis Harshaw and special care-giver and niece Haley Harshaw. Several great nieces and nephews as well. She also leaves behind her cat Kiki who was her constant companion.

Alice’s family has chosen to remember her life privately.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, Maine 04841.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
