OWLS HEAD – Arvo G. Salo, 93, husband of Nettie Hawes Salo, died unexpectedly at his home, Saturday, June 23, 2018.

Born in Rockland, May 21, 1925, he was the son of Frank O. and Aili Keskilammi Salo. He attended Owls Head schools.

At the age of 15, Arvo began working, helping in construction of the Knox County Airport. He later worked at Snow’s Shipyard in Rockland, Camden Shipyard and during World War II, at Bath Iron Works. Following the war, he worked with area building contractors, having learned the building trade from his father and uncle.
February 24, 1945, he married Nettie F. Hawes in Rockland.

In 1951, Arvo worked as Foreman with Alfred McFarland Contractors in construction of the Owls Head Central School. He later served in that same capacity in construction of the Rockport Elementary School.
In 1953, he began Salo Construction Company, developing and building many homes on Melrose Circle and Lawn Avenue in Rockland.

In 1952, Arvo and Nettie began spending winters in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. While there, he completed his GED and graduated from Stranahan High School. He attended Palm Beach Junior College for two years.

From 1963 to 1970, he lived and worked as a building contractor in Florida. After returning to Owls Head, in 1971, he began building McDonald’s restaurants and ultimately built 13 of those facilities throughout Maine, as well as renovating and doing additions to many of those buildings. He later completed a new addition to the Waterville Public Library and built several elderly housing facilities throughout Maine. He also did construction work for New England Telephone Company and Central Maine Power. Later in his career, Arvo enjoyed building sauna’s for many local families.
Never one to sit idle, Arvo had been working on a project in his garage the morning of his passing.

Arvo was a long-time charter member of the Finn/Am Society and served several years as Vice President of that organization. He also served as Vice President of the Finnish Heritage House, and helped build the Finnish Congregational Church, both in South Thomaston.

Other than his parents, Arvo was pre-deceased by his son, Robert Wayne Springer Salo; three brothers, Hannes P. Salo and Frank A. Salo. He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Nettie, of Owls Head; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, July 5, at Sea View Cemetery, corner of Chestnut & Bayview Streets, Rockport. The Rev. Stephen Tracey will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Finn/Am Society of Mid-coast Maine, P.O. Box 488, Warren, ME 04864, or Maine Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 553, Portland, ME 04112-0553.
