Obituary for Elizabeth Fischer-Faber Johnson

Born December 9, 1918, at 3 ½ pounds in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Chester O. Fischer and Catherine Meyers Fischer. Catherine died of influenza soon after childbirth so Liz was primarily raised by her Aunt Emily H. Faber, and her husband Fred Meyers Faber. Elizabeth attended Smith College for 2 years, then on to Northwestern for another year till her marriage on Sept 21, 1940, to Ernest A. Johnson, Jr. They then lived in eastern Massachusetts till 1944 moving to Corpus Christi, TX, in support of WW2. Liz brought forth her first child there but lived in Texas for only a few months preferring the more temperate climates of Maine. She stayed with her mother in Owls Head from 1945 till around 1948, when they moved to Amherst, MA, and stayed there for forty years, bearing 3 more children. In 1988 Liz and Al retired to her mother’s estate in Owls Head, building a new house “Casa Nuevo” on that land.
Elizabeth was a world traveler throughout her life, beginning in her formative years going to Russia, Europe, Egypt, with her family and Grandmother Evelyn M. Hix aboard a variety of transoceanic vessels, trains, and coaches. Later in life she traveled in France, Germany, England, Canada, Chile, Peru, Argentina. She enjoyed a Cunard Cruise Lines world Cruise aboard the MV QEII with Al and most recently a a Blount River Cruise of the Mississippi and a Viking Cruise in Russia between Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
Elizabeth bore four children, Peter Faber Johnson in May of 1945, Frederick Lamont Johnson in May of 1950, Emily Hix Johnson in May of 1955, and Christopher “Kyp” Hall Johnson in February of 1957. She has lived to enjoy her 9 grandchildren. She has also been fortunate to live to see and enjoy her 5 great grandchildren.
She enjoyed her life and lived it in a marvelous way. Friends and acquaintances can easily agree Elizabeth was an elegantly poised woman we all admired. Her greatest joys were seeing and knowing that her family were happy and cared for. She loved being with her friends and was philanthropically dedicated to P.E.O., Rockland Congo Church, Amherst College, Shakespeare Society, Rockland Public Library and many other charitable organizations.
Elizabeth died peacefully at home just before breakfast the morning of 19 June 2018. She was just months away from reaching her goal of 100 years of age. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband Al, sister Catherine Fischer Parker, Half-brother, Chester O. Fischer Jr., half-sister, Virginia Farquahar, son Frederick Faber, and daughter Emily Hix.
