CAMDEN - Reginald N. Dean, 83, passed away on May 29, 2018 after a long illness.
Born November 19, 1934 in Milo, Maine, he was the son of Ruth Naomi Dean of Milo, Maine, and Osmond and Leta Hammond of Camden, Maine.

Mr. Dean married Thelma Iona Small on June 3, 1956 in Camden, Maine. He is survived by his wife, Thelma, his daughter Rhondalee Arey Dean-Royce and her husband Winston W. Royce, his son Michael D. Dean and his companion Christine McLarty, his son Christopher N. Dean and his wife T. Dean and his son Timothy S. Dean and his companion Lisa Greenwood, and his daughter-in-law Maureen Dean. His grandchildren also include Arey-Buchanan Dean Royce, Ainsley-Ryan Dean Royce, Connor Christopher Dean, Danielle Beaulieau, Katie Beaulieau, Jessica Dean, Liza Harriman, Rachael Harriman and his great grandson Simon Dean Algara, as well as his cousin Lawrence Bing Sturgeon and family.

Reginald Dean graduated the University of Maine at Orono, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History, Bachelor of Science and Masters Degree in History. He worked as a Master Carpenter and Cabinet Maker. He was also a History and Science teacher for the Belfast School System along with being a coach for the varsity baseball team.

Reginald Dean went to the Maine Military Academy where he graduated as a Second Lieutenant. Mr. Dean continued his officer special defense security and combat engineer training at the Univ. of Missouri, University of Massachusetts, and University of Georgia. He also trained at Ft. Belvoir, VA, Ft. Leonardwood, MO and Ft. Devens, MA. He served three tours during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of Captain. He was a Company Commander for the 20th Engineer Brigade, 617th Combat Engineer Company. During his time in Vietnam from 1967-1972, Captain Dean was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor, the U.S. Army Commendation Medal, the Army of the Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal, the Civil Actions Honor Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Four Overseas Bars, and the U.S. Army Security Agency Commendation. He was a U.S. Army Advisor, Special Forces, Green Berets, and Montagnards Advisor. He was also recognized by the Republic of Vietnam for meritorious service during the building of a Bailey Bridge in Quan Luc under an enormous fire fight.

Mr. Dean enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and camping with his family. He always spoke about how he would have liked to become part of the Maine Wardens Service. Mr. Dean was an avid reader and a skilled outdoorsman and enjoyed travelling around the state to both sharp shooter and archery tournaments. As a master carpenter he built beautiful shaker and custom furniture, along with designing and building a lot of the homes around Camden and Rockport area. He was also for a time the caretaker of Curtis Island Light House.

Mr. Dean was a longstanding member of the Camden-Rockport Masons, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Vietnam Veterans of America and the American Legion. He was a recognized Cub Master and Den Master leader with the Maine Boy Scouts, having been an Eagle Scout himself.

Mr. Dean is preceded in death by his son Jeffrey N. Dean, who passed away June 4, 2014, his parents, his Dean Great Aunts and Uncles.

A graveside service with Military Honors, will be held at 9:00 am, Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at Oak Hill Cemetery North, Hosmer Pond Road, Camden.
