TENANTS HARBOR – Melvin E. ‘Capt. Gus’ Davis, 77, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at his home.

Born in St. George, July 26, 1940, Gus was the son of Edward and Arlene Benner Davis. Educated locally, he attended St. George High School.

On June 27, 1964 Gus married the love of his life, Gloria Jean Colpritt in Rockland. Together they have been life-long Tenants Harbor residents.

For most of his life, Melvin worked on the sea, owning his own lobster boat, and commercial fishing operation. Gus was a well-known in the community and has been a hard worker his entire life. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, you knew he had something important to say. After the passing of his wife, Gus began attending the First Baptist Church of Tenants Harbor. A private man, he had a huge heart and gave quietly and regularly to help with different church projects, especially Operation Christmas Child as well as to any community members in need. Earlier in his life, Melvin was a member of the St. George Fire Department, even serving under his father, Edward Davis as assistant fire chief.

He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
