VINALHAVEN - Bruce Gordon Johnson, 90, of Vinalhaven passed away April 6, 2018 at the Sussman House with his son, Brian at his bedside.

Bruce was born March 16, 1928 to Gudrun Salvia (Johanson) Johnson of Kristiania, Norway and Gust Emil Johnson of Lysekil, Sweden. Bruce was very proud of his Scandinavian heritage.

He was educated on Vinalhaven in his early years until his family moved to Massachusetts, where he graduated from Jamaica Plain High School in 1946. Returning to Vinalhaven, Bruce married Arlene Virginia Philbrook on July 15, 1950. Together they shared 67 years of marriage. The two lived on Vinalhaven raising their son, though Bruce traveled for work as a carpenter and contractor. He spent time working across the state of Maine, and as far away as Florida. He also spent time as a lobsterman on Vinalhaven, fishing from the Arlene V, a boat built by his father. Later Bruce’s son joined him in the contracting business and the father and son spent many years building houses together.

Predeceased by his parents; and his wife just last December; Bruce is survived by his son Brian Johnson and his wife Stephanie Mills; and three grandchildren, Kylene Johnson, Cole Mills and Myra Mills all of Vinalhaven.
A service to celebrate the lives of Bruce & Arlene is being planned for July.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
