SPRUCE HEAD - On July 15th, 2018, heaven gained another angel. Lawrence C. Oakes, Sr. joined his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Oakes, who predeceased him 19 days earlier on June 27, 2018.

Lawrence Chaney Oakes, Sr. was born January 4, 1927, to Lamonte C. and Frances Gray Oakes on the island of Vinalhaven. Lawrence was the older brother of Victor Oakes and Muriel Conway. Lawrence attended the island school and left at age 17 to join the United States Navy during World War II. Enlisting on November 1, 1944, he served aboard the USS Boxer CV21 in the South Pacific as a Gunners Mate. He received an honorable discharge on November 6, 1947.

Upon returning home to Vinalhaven from serving his country, Lawrence met Dorothy “Dolly” Card Morton who would become the love of his life. Lawrence and Dolly were married on December 27, 1952, raised a family and loved one another for 65 years.

Lawrence and Dolly resided on Vinalhaven for a short time before moving to Oxford, Maine, where he worked in the textile mills. Soon after, they moved to Spruce Head. Lawrence worked in the Clark Island Quarry, B&R Trucking Company in Rockland owned by Irma Upham, the Camden Tannery, and later, alongside his wife, as a fish cutter at F.J. O’Hara’s until their closure. From there, Lawrence worked at the Great Eastern Mussel Farm in St George until he retired.

Lawrence was a member of the American Legion for 19 years and a member of the VFW Post 3108.

Lawrence enjoyed gardening, mowing the lawn, clamming, smelting at the ‘crick’ in Thomaston in the spring of the year, sharing his catch with family and neighbors, daily walks along Route 73 in Spruce Head waiving to every car that passed him and camping at Beaver Lodge. Lawrence loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Lawrence is survived by five children, Lonnie W. Morton and his wife Kathy of Vinalhaven, Patricia A. Rackliff and her husband Dennis A. of Spruce Head, Lawrence C. Oakes, Jr. and his wife Betty of Spruce Head, Larry L. Oakes and his wife Linda of South Thomaston, and Sharon Tolman and her husband Scott of Vinalhaven; thirteen grandchildren, Amanda, Jana, Landon, Candice, Rebecca, Jennifer, Lindsey, Lawrence III, Tracy, Lori, Octavia, Tex, and Michelle, as well as twenty-two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Muriel Conway and her husband Clarence.

A combined graveside service for Lawrence and Dolly will take place at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 24, 2018 at the Sea View Cemetery in Spruce Head. A celebration of life and social gathering will immediately follow behind Automaster in Spruce Head. The family wishes to thank the staff of Knox Center for Long Term Care, for the care they provided to Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, Maine 04841.
