Obituary for Paul A. Mahonen, Sr.

Paul A. Mahonen, Sr.
SOUTH THOMASTON - Paul Arthur Mahonen Sr. age 66, died March 12, 2018 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, surrounded by his family.

Born in Rockland, July 12, 1951, he was the son of Toivo and Katherine Cassidy Mahonen.

Paul was a very quiet gentle man always ready with a helping hand. Because he was a man of few words you could get his approval or disapproval by looking him in the eye.

He was devoted to his kids and whatever profession he was encountering, which included A & J Auto Electric, Lobstering, Clamming, and his broad spectrum of hobbies. One of his earlier hobbies was building and racing stock cars. He enjoyed building his own home, making beautiful Christmas wreaths, gardening both vegetable and flowers, growing his own fruit trees, tapping maple trees and preparing, and preserving the produce from his garden; all of this done with good old-fashioned tools, hard labor, and his oxygen line trailing behind him. If you couldn’t reach Paul on his “handy dandy” cell phone then start looking at his favorite fishing spots. The first place being the “Keag” striper fishing.
He would check on his family and friends almost every day. If you asked “what are you up to today” the reply would be “oh just making my rounds.”

Other than his parents, Paul was pre-deceased by a sister Sandra (Mahonen) Frost. He is survived by his partner of 16 years Florence Leach; his sons Joseph Walsh and his wife Charlene, all of South Thomaston, Paul A. Mahonen, II and his companion Nicole, Ryan C. Mahonen, all of Knox; his blended family Paul and Jennifer Leach of Waldoboro, Eric Novicka of Lexington, TN, Janine and Michael Giggey of Montville, Charlene and Gilbert Lehman of Surgoinville, TN; his siblings David Mahonen and Lucille of South Thomaston, Sharon Tyler of Auburn; the mother of his sons Bea Thomas of Knox, 19 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren (who nicknamed him “Grumpa”), as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at Burpee, Carpenter and Hutchins Funeral Home 110 Limerock St. Rockland. The Reverend Wayne Sawyer will officiate. Interment will be at a later date in the Village Cemetery, South Thomaston. Memorial donations may be made to Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
