Obituary for David S. Faulkingham
CUSHING - David Sawyer Faulkingham, 82, died peacefully on the evening of February 10, 2018 with many of his loving family around him.
He was born on April 20, 1935 in Exeter, NH, a half-hour after his identical twin brother, Donald. David lived with his parents Charles and Alice Norton Faulkingham, brothers, Ernest and Donald, and younger sisters, Louise and Gloria in Jonesport and later in Friendship. David graduated from Waldoboro High School in 1954 with the distinction of being named ‘Best Looking, Best Personality and Best Dancer’ of his senior class!
Following high school, he married Lois Delano from Cushing and they built a house there where they raised their four children. Lois was Postmistress of the town and David worked for 30 years as an electrician at Bath Iron Works. David held his Class B driver’s license and often drove the BIW bus that transported his co-workers to and from work each day. He was a caretaker for Norman Read on the Guant Neck estate and eventually built a home that he loved on a private cove nearby.
David was noted for being a hard worker, and threw himself enthusiastically into everything he did. He was always athletic, and loved to ski, skate and roller skate, later becoming a huge Patriots and Red Sox fan. Music was an enormous passion in David's life. From childhood he was able to play several instruments by ear including the piano, guitar, and harmonica. He later taught himself to play the fiddle, saxophone and clarinet. David and Donald formed a band called the ‘Wing Nuts’ which performed at Odd Fellows events and played ‘the nursing home circuit’ (as he called it). David had a beautiful singing voice and loved to teach his grandchildren the old songs, even writing a few special ones himself. In the past few years the highlights of each week were playing at the Music Jam in Thomaston and dances in Union on Saturday nights. Being a member of the Odd Fellows in Warren was an important part of David’s life ever since he was a young man. David was known for his ability to memorize all of the degrees and to never make a mistake. He was honored to be asked frequently to officiate at the services for lodge members who had passed away. David will be particularly remembered for being more than willing to give a helping hand wherever it was needed.
Everyone appreciated David's dry sense of humor. He and Donald loved to laugh the hardest at each other's jokes. There are many wonderful twin stories about him and ‘Bud’, as they called each other; and brother Donald ‘Bud-wiser’ as he liked to call himself, has been sorely missed since he died in 2010.
David is predeceased by his parents and brothers, Ernest and Donald. He is survived by his loving children, Rhonda Lee of Rockland, Gregory Faulkingham of Cushing, Colleen Rickard and her husband Tim of St. George, and Alison Faulkingham and her husband Jon Wood of Rockport; as well as their mother, his former wife and close friend, Lois Delano Faulkingham of Cushing.
He leaves behind grandchildren, Rebecca Marcoux and husband Tim of Rockland, Joshua Faulkingham and companion Courtney Young of Charleston, ME, Aimee Faulkingham of Cushing, Anna Libby of Rockland, Rose Libby of Nobleboro, Kristin and Megan Rickard of St George, and Emillie and Lilian Wood of Rockport; great-grandsons, Landon, Gage, Avery, August, Brody and Vance; his sisters, Louise Hawkins and husband Alvin of Thomaston, and Gloria Luce and husband Wayne of Warren; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a special brother and sister-in-law Bob and Liz Delano of Cushing.
