SEARSMONT – Edwin H. Tyler, 95, formerly of St. George, died Thursday, January 25, 2018, at a Bangor hospital following a period of declining health.
Born in Rockland, September 19, 1922, he was the son of Ralph Waldo and Ermine Hawes Tyler. While growing up in South Thomaston, he attended local schools and was a graduate of Rockland High School, class of 1941.
August 18th, 1942, Mr. Tyler enlisted in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, where he served more than three years until his honorable discharge December 11th, 1945. For 30 months of that time, he served as a teletype operator with Allied Force Headquarters in North Africa and Italy.
After returning home, on October 26th, 1947, he married Eleanor Ames Jarrett in Camden. The couple made their home many years at Clark Island in St. George.
From 1941 to 1980, Mr. Tyler was employed as office manager at Algin Corporation of America, which later became Marine Colloid, Inc., now known as FMC Corporation at their Rockland plant.
After his retirement in 1980, Mr. Tyler and his wife became ‘snow-birds’ spending winter months in Florida.
He loved American history and was well versed in local history as well. Playing card games was a favorite pastime, and he invented several games the family still plays. He enjoyed crossword puzzles; the harder the better and would often do those found in the New York Times. Horse-shoes and Ping-Pong were other games he enjoyed.
He was a longtime member and Lay Minister at Peoples United Methodist Church in South Thomaston.
Other than his wife Eleanor in 2014, Mr. Tyler was pre-deceased by his parents, his brother Ralph B. Tyler in 2002 and his sister Sylvia Buma. He is survived by three sons and their wives, Stephen M., Sr. and Patricia Jarrett, Glidden O. and Beverly Tyler all of Wiscasset, James R. and Patricia Tyler of Searsmont; one daughter, Barbara Boss and her husband Keith of New Port Richey, FL; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ralph (Annie) Tyler of South Thomaston; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
