OWLS HEAD – Ronald Thomas Winter, 65, known as Ron to family and friends, passed away unexpectedly in one of his favorite places, his self-built workshop, Sunday, December 31, 2017.

Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, February 7, 1952, he grew up in Arlington, MA, graduating from Arlington High School in 1969. Ron continued his education at the University of Rhode Island where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Botany. Despite this science degree, Ron took an affinity to computers and spent more than 20 years in the computer world, where he was a hardware engineer for several companies, and a co-owner of his own business and a contractor to finish his career.

Ron was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Mozelle Phillips Winter. He is survived by his loving wife Stephanie Lufkin Winter of Owls Head; his son William Winter and his wife April of Ashburnham, MA; his daughter Roberta Westerman and her husband Timothy of West Boylston, MA; a brother Richard Winter and his wife Lynne of Harvard, MA; a sister Jacqueline Lamoureux and her husband Greg of Hull, MA; grandchildren, Avril and Alec Westerman; a grandson on the way, Maverick Winter; niece, Cheryl Bacon, nephews, John Bacon and Timothy Winter; his dog Ramses the Great; as well as many other family and friends. He will be missed eternally by all who knew and loved him.

Ron was a tinkering man who was fond of odd projects, cars, his house and more. He took great pride in his gardens each year and started the growing process indoors every winter. His camera was never far from his side, as he loved photography, especially taking pictures of his family and nature. Out on the water was a calming place for Ron, whether he was on his sailboat, Cassiopeia, enjoying the open waters, or in his center console catching fish. Ron’s carpentry skills were displayed through the toy boxes he made for his kids when they were young, the doll house he built for his granddaughter, the house he renovated with his son in Owls Head, the shop and garage he recently completed, and so much more. When Ron wasn’t building or tinkering he loved to play and listen to music. A favorite pastime was camping with his family, a tradition that lead him to Owls Head. Ron’s roots in Owls Head grew from camping to living there full time. He eventually became a property owner and landlord in Rockland, St. George and Thomaston. Ron loved a good novel, and especially enjoyed relaxing with one on the porch, the boat, the beach or anywhere in-between.

Ron was a loving man who had a heart as big as the great outdoors. Despite his stubborn nature, everyone enjoyed his company. He could hold a conversation with anyone, and loved his sit-down talks with his brother Richard. Throughout his life he showed the drive and willpower to overcome many obstacles, a trait he passed on to his children. He took every opportunity he could to spend time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren, Avril and Alec. He was beyond excited to meet his newest grandson, Maverick, who is due in March.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, in warmer weather, where it’s always “5 o’clock somewhere”. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland; or Arlington Boys and Girls Club, 60 Pond Lane, Arlington, MA 02474.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
