Obituary for Marion Shuman Hall

Print
ROCKLAND – Marion Shuman Hall, 101, surrounded by the love and spirit of her family, passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Day, 2017, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

Born in Camden, October 15, 1916, she was the daughter of George A. and Edith M. Long Shuman. She grew up at her family’s inn, the Homestead Inn, on High Street in Camden. Educated in local schools, she was a Graduate of Camden High School, class of 1934. She also attended Gorham Normal School.

Marion married George C. Hall on March 27, 1943 in Camden.

In 1945, the couple moved to their Rockland home which had been Marion’s grandfather’s home. It was in that home they raised a family of five children. They were later overjoyed with the additions of many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even a great-great-grandchild. The consummate wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Marion’s door was always open to family, friends and neighbors alike. She was devoted to her family, referring to it as her “number one love.” She treasured the family Sunday dinners that she and George hosted for many years. Marion was by George’s side as he grew his earth work business, and, in later years, the two of them savored their travels to warm destinations together.

For several years, she visited MacDougal School in Rockland, where she enjoyed reading to first grade students. She was an accomplished water colorist and avid cross-word puzzle solver. For decades, she painted her own Christmas cards.

Other than her parents and sister, Polly Freytag MacDonald, Marion was pre-deceased by her husband of 50 years, George C. Hall, in 1993. She is survived by her children, Susan H. Barbour and her husband Dr. William of Rockland, Judith H. Simmons and her husband Dennis of Union, Timothy A. Hall of Rockland, James M. Hall and his wife Joan of Owls Head, Carrie L. Hall-Indorf and her husband Paul of South Portland; 11 grandchildren, Beth Barbour, Jake Barbour and his wife Tanja, Jason T. Simmons and his wife Holly, Jessica Hosford and her husband Ralph, Denise Morris and her husband Robert, Tori Lowe and her husband Elliot, Jamie Hall and his wife Kelly, Samuel Hall and his companion Lindsay Dean, Lauren Hall, Evan Indorf and Olivia Indorf; 20 great-grandchildren, Thomas, Cole, Julia, Eric, Eva, Ivan, Eliza, Zoe, Ella, Jenna, Owen, Noah, Otis, Maxwell, Sophie, Jacqueline, Casey, Sydney, Charley, and Harper; and one great-great-grandchild, Alden, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. Marion was also pre-deceased by a dear friend, Willard F. Howard.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A Celebration of Marion’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 4, 2018, at the Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Seth D. Jones will officiate. Interment will be at a later date. Those who wish may make memorial donations to a local charity/organization of their choice. Marion supported many local charities and organizations in her 101 years, including Oceanside Little League; Rockland Public Library Endowment Association; Rockland Congregational Church; and Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County.
