ROCKLAND - Carleton O. Wooster, 95, died Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at his home in Rockland.

Born on June 4, 1922, he was the son of Ansel and Elvie (Robinson) Wooster. He began his education at the one-room Ingraham’s Hill School in Owls Head, continuing through the fifth grade. Moving to Rockland he attended sixth grade at McLain School. Carleton attended junior high and high school at the Rockland High School building, graduating in 1940. During high school, he delivered the Portland Press Herald to a large part of the south end in Rockland.

After high school, he was employed at the Vesper Leach clothing store in Rockland, and then at the Camden shipyard. He was drafted to serve in the Army in January 1943, during World War II. He received basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was then sent to Brisbane, Australia where he was assigned to the 121st Field Artillery Battalion, which was a part of the 32nd Infantry Division. After training in Australia, he participated in the New Guinea, Southern Philippines and Luzon campaigns. After the war ended in 1945 he returned to Fort Devens, Massachusetts, where he received an honorable discharge.

Upon his return home, he started working in January, 1946 in the line department for Central Maine Power Company in Rockland. He retired from there nearly 39 years later in 1984.

Following his retirement, he and his wife of 66 years enjoyed spending some winter months in Florida, where in that area, they were referred to as “snow birds”.

Carleton was a long time member of the First Baptist Church starting at the age of 13 when he made the decision to put his faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Carleton was pre-deceased by his wife, Leona; his brother Milton; his daughter Carlene King as well as her husband Dale King; he is survived by his son Raymond Wooster and his companion Brenda Harrington; his brother Ervin Wooster and his wife Joyce; granddaughters, Meredith Reardon and her husband Matthew, Dana Grubbs, Tracy Hayslip and her husband Jon; great-grandchildren, Logan Grubbs, Kasey Grubbs, Paisley and Acadia Hayslip; and a great-great-grandchild Annalise, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering will be held from 10:30 to 12:00 p.m., Friday, October 27, 2017 at 104 Limerock, Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home’s reception facility. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m., at Achorn Cemetery, Old County Road, Rockland.
