Obituary for Edith M. Willey Doherty

WEST ROCKPORT - Our loving mother Edith May Willey Doherty, 84, of West Rockport, died of cancer at the Sussman House, and went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, September 26, 2017, while surrounded by the warmth of her family.

Edith was born in Rockland, August 16, 1933, the daughter of Walter and Louise Dordon Willey. On October 24, 1951 she married Robert Doherty and they had eleven children together. Edith was a loving wife and mother and dedicated her life raising her children and was blessed to see the births of numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Despite having to endure Robert’s death at a young age as well as the loss of four sons and a daughter, she always kept her deep faith and love of Christ. In her later years, and with an exceptional memory of her life, she became quite a story teller, always adding a touch of humor. Her smile lit up her face which made her eyes sparkle and her laughter was infectious. She loved spiritual music and always witnessed her beliefs to her family and even to strangers. She loved to write Christian poetry, some being published. She was a personal inspiration to many who knew her.

Edith is survived by six children and their spouses; Linda and Phil Schlegel of Winslow; Susan Maldonado of Rockland, William and Joan Doherty of Owls Head, Albert and Pamela Doherty of Warren, Thomas and Debbie Doherty of West Rockport, Raymond and Karen Doherty of East Hampton, Connecticut. She also leaves behind daughters-in-law Donna Doherty of Camden and Nancy Doherty of Chelsea, as well as numerous grandchildren, great, and great-great grandchildren. Edith was survived by six younger siblings and their spouses; Walter and Katie Willey of Owls Head, David and Beverly Willey of Washington, Dennis and Peggy Willey of Swanville, James and Wanda Willey of Union, Mary Jacobson of Bangor, and Mildred and Wayne Johnson of Liberty, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pre-deceased were her parents, husband Robert T. Doherty; sons John Doherty, Robert Doherty Jr., Richard Doherty, Ronald Doherty; daughter Cynthia Weed, her brother John Willey, and granddaughter Lauren Rae Doherty. She was also the widow of Gerald K. Eutsler.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, October 6, 2017 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 7, 2017 at West Rockport Baptist Church, 545 Park Street, West Rockport. The Reverend David English will officiate. A reception will be held immediately following the service. Interment will take place at Achorn Cemetery.
