ROCKLAND – Cynthia Barbour Packard, 85, died Sunday, March 11, 2018, surrounded by her family at the Sussman House in Rockport.

Born in Boothbay, August 26, 1932, she was the daughter of Clinton E. and Harriet Ames Barbour. Cynthia moved to Rockland at a young age and was educated in local schools. She was a 1950 graduate of Rockland High School.

September 2, 1950, she married Ronald F. Packard in Rockland. The couple made their first home in a small apartment on Grace Street, and after living in two other Grace Street apartments, bought the home they would reside in all their married lives at 63 Grace Street. Cynthia lived in that home after her husband’s death in 2013, until moving to Bartlett Woods, last October.

For many years she enjoyed a weekly gathering of lady friends for coffee and fellowship.

Cynthia’s smiling face welcomed many entering W.C. Ladd Insurance Agency in Rockland, where she worked as Receptionist more than 32 years.

She loved keeping flower gardens at her home and traveling with her husband which included Ocean Cruises. She also enjoyed going to the beach, her favorite being Crockets Beach in Owls Head.

Cynthia was a past member of the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion Post No.1, Ladies Auxiliary. She loved visiting the Legion and the many friendships she shared there.

Pre-deceased by her parents and husband, Cynthia is survived by two daughters Susan P. Benner and her husband Theodore, Jr. of Rockland, Rhonda Packard Benner and her husband Gary of Friendship; four grandchildren, Lindsay B. Dean and her companion Sam Hall of South Thomaston, Clint E. Dean of Rockland, Lucas R. Benner and his companion Lindsay Smerdon of Friendship, Adam Lachance of Rockport; four great-grandchildren, Noah, Avery, Xavier and Oliver; step-grandchildren, Michael, Robie, and Aaron Benner; three cousins, Dr. William Barbour of Rockland, Dolly McLain of Thomaston, Lucille Reisner of Massachusetts; a life-long friend she considered as a sister, Claire Coffey and her husband Andrew of Owls Head, a brother-in-law Richard Ilvonen of Owls Head; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00pm, Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a Celebration of Cynthia’s life will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, March 22. A reception will follow at the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion, Post No. 1, 335 Limerock Street, Rockland. Spring interment will be in Achorn Cemetery.
