Obituary for Velma Rose Flenke

TENANTS HARBOR – Velma R. Flenke, 97, died Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born in Louisberg, Kansas, October 29, 1919, she was one of seven children of John and Agnes Speilbush Surber. As a teen, she moved with her family to South Windsor, Connecticut. On April 19, 1936, she married Harold A. Flenke. The couple lived most of their married lives in East Hartford, Conn., where they raised their children.

Following her husband’s retirement, the couple moved to Palm Coast, Florida, where they lived for 12 years. Mr. Flenke died in 1998, and in 2000, Velma moved to Maine to be close to her daughter.

Velma is survived by her children, Harold A. Flenke, Jr. and his wife Elaine, Carol L. Flenke, all of Englewood, FL, Richard M. Flenke and his wife Brenda of Longs, SC, Jean E. Simmons and her husband Ronald of Tenants Harbor; one sister, Roseann Boudreau of Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren; many great and great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 9, 2017, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Interment will follow immediately at Seaside Cemetery, Route 131, Tenants Harbor.
