Unconditional Love

What I remember most about Judy are the warmth with which she always greeted me and the sparkle in her lovely eyes.

Back in the day, Gene and I hunted ducks and fished for freshwater bass A LOT. This meant that I showed up at the McKeevers’ pale yellow house on Park Street well before dawn in the morning and usually arrived back in their driveway in the middle of the day—wet, muddy, and stinking of fish or waterfowl.

Judy, however, was always welcoming, no matter how we looked or how delayed we were. I know that she appreciated how much Gene enjoyed these forays into the outdoors and fully understood how they provided him with a needed break from the intensity of his work at W. C. Ladd, where he sold insurance back then. (Like so many of us, I was Gene’s client as well as his friend.)

I remember, too, that every time I stepped inside the Park Street house, my eyes would immediately go to the gorgeous framed wedding dress in the stairwell that rose from the entryway. This display never ceased to impress me as a wonderfully fitting tribute to the extraordinary, enduring love that Gene and Judy felt for each other.

I feel exceptionally fortunate to have known both of them.
