ST. GEORGE – H. Peter Muth, 78, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 29, 2017 at the Sussman House in Rockport, following a brief illness.

Born in Berlin, Germany, June 7, 1939, he was the son of Alois and Elsa Keller Muth. Growing up in Germany, he was educated there, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Finance from Hamburg University in 1960. He continued his education, completing PhD research in France, as well as earning a PhD in Political Science from Columbia University, New York in 1969.

On December 23, 1961, Mr. Muth married his best friend and love of his life, Marilyn Gleason. Together they have enjoyed a life filled with travel, togetherness and family.

An extremely intelligent man, Mr. Muth was a natural leader. He has held numerous positions with companies, organizations, banks and governments all over the world. Working in more than 70 countries throughout his career, he has led many multi-disciplinary and multi-national professional teams, managed financial and financial services companies from start-up through operations, researched, written and edited several books, manuals and articles, as well as organizing and speaking at international conferences and seminars on a variety of development subjects.

After being diagnosed with cancer ten years ago, Mr. Muth’s life path took a different course. In his own words, he shifted his focus from being career and goal oriented, to allowing faith and charity to take over his life. He began volunteering his time, working and singing with KAIROS International Prison Ministry, teaching two business courses at Maine State Prison, serving as a counselor with the Augusta Chapter of SCORE, serving as a board member for WindowDressers, and founding and managing ‘The Caring Fund’ at St. Brendan the Navigator Parish. He said he became truly fulfilled once he retired and allowed these things to take over his life. His final wish was to be remembered with joy and celebration.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 150 Broadway, Rockland. The Reverend Robert Valliancourt will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Caring Fund, c/o St. Brendan The Navigator Parish, 7 Union Street, Camden, ME 04843.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
