Obituary for Charles W. Whalen Sr.

Charles W.  Whalen Sr.
CAMDEN – Charles W. Whalen, Sr., 95, formerly of Liberty, died Friday, March 17, 2017 at Windward Gardens he has resided the past two years.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, October 20, 1921, he was one of four children of George and Alice Follett Whalen. He lived in Belmont where he attended local schools and was a 1939 graduate of Belmont High School.
He was a World War II, U.S. Army Veteran and had attained the rank of Technical Sergeant at the time of his discharge in September of 1945.
April 25, 1943, he married Winifred N. Cassidy at Belmont, Massachusetts. Although Charlie returned to military duty shortly after their wedding, the couple made their first home in Belmont.
Following his discharge from the Army, Charlie attended Wentworth Institute in Boston.
For most of his career, he worked as construction estimator.
In 1979, he moved his family to Liberty where he lived until being hospitalized in 2014.
Other than his parents, Charlie was pre-deceased by his beloved wife in 2008, and a daughter Willajean O’Donohue in 2009. He is survived two sons, Charles W. “Bill” Whalen, Jr. and his wife Toshiko of Brunswick, Jeffery D. Whalen of Belfast; one daughter, Charlene M. Olivares of El Cajon, CA; numerous grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A committal service with Military Honors, will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, March 27, 2017, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
