GLEN COVE at ROCKPORT – Gordon K. Stanley, 95, died Friday, March 17, 2017, at the Sussman House in Rockport.

Born in Rockland, April 26, 1921, he was the son of Harold F. and Eva B. Young Stanley. He was educated in Rockland schools. Following his marriage to Doris J. Butler, Gordon moved with his wife to Rockport, where he has since resided.

Throughout his career, Gordon was recognized as an accomplished fine furniture builder and cabinet maker. With no formal training, he was self-taught. He often said that his ability came naturally and he enjoyed figuring out each piece he delved into. When asked about his ability, he said, “A lot of people have asked me where I received my training as a cabinet maker … I guess it just came naturally.” During World War II, he worked as a cabinet maker at Snows Ship Yard in Rockland.

As a hobby, he enjoyed working on tube radios, and continued doing this until his eyesight failed in 2012. For more than 21 years, Gordon worked with his brother-in-law Carl Butler, selling used cars at C.B. Auto Annex in Glen Cove. Even after retiring from that venture, the two enjoyed going out to lunch every week.
Predeceased by his wife Doris in 1988 and a granddaughter, Donna Doris Martinze; Gordon is survived by his two daughters, Helen Bickford of West Rockport, Nancy Counce and her husband Alan of Rockland; his sister, Janice Pendleton of Massachusetts; grandchildren, Scott Bickford, Jr., Brandi Bickford both of Rockport, Adrian Counce of Belfast and Ryan Counce of Rockland; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Jeffrey, Coben, and Patience; as well as a brother-in-law, Carl Butler of Palermo.

A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Wayne Sawyer will officiate. Spring interment will be in the Glen Cove Cemetery, Rockport.
